Philadelphia's Schuylkill River Trail ranks as one of the most iconic sections of the East Coast Greenway.

About the East Coast Greenway

Connecting people to place from Maine to Florida.

Imagine a place where bicyclists, walkers, runners, inline skaters, horseback riders, wheelchair users, cross-country skiers and more — of all ages and abilities — feel safe for commuting and recreation. While out for a day's ride, you may pass people traveling from state to state — or the entire East Coast.

The East Coast Greenway is a walking and biking route stretching 3,000 miles from Maine to Florida, connecting our nation’s most populated corridor. The East Coast Greenway is designed to transform the 15 states and 450 communities it connects through active and healthy lifestyles, sustainable transportation, community engagement, climate resilience, tourism, and more. The Greenway offers a safe place for bicyclists, walkers, runners, and more — of all ages and abilities — to commute, exercise, and visit new destinations.

The nonprofit East Coast Greenway Alliance leads the development of the trail network. We work with hundreds of volunteers, partner organizations, and officials at the local, state, regional and national level to continue moving more of the route onto protected paths. Together, we are connecting people to nature and communities via a safe, accessible Greenway.

Our Mission and Vision

grissom trail logo wide

Our mission: To partner with local, state, and national agencies and organizations to promote the establishment, stewardship, and public enjoyment of a safe and accessible multi-user greenway linking cities and towns from Maine to Florida.

Our vision: The East Coast Greenway vision is a 3,000-mile route for biking, walking, and other active means from Maine to Florida. It will host tens of millions of visits per year as a linear park separated from motor vehicle traffic that connects major cities, small towns, and the nature around them. By providing fun, safe, and accessible infrastructure for everything from a local commute to a long adventure, the Greenway will foster healthy, sustainable, and prosperous communities throughout the Eastern Seaboard.

The Greenway at a Glance

1

Connecting the nation's most populated corridor.

It’s a bold, ambitious vision: 3,000 miles of protected greenway — not to mention another 1,000 miles of our complementary route. In 2020, the East Coast Greenway hosted 50 million bike rides, runs and walks, becoming the most popular park in America.

2

Connecting people.

From the start, our founders designed the Greenway to go where people live, so the route travels through 25 cities — 450 communities in all — and connects locals and visitors as they walk, run, bike, skate and more.

3

An investment in a healthy, sustainable future.

The Greenway is good for business, good for public health and good for transportation infrastructure. Together with our partnering communities, we're creating an equitable linear park that everyone can enjoy for generations to come.

Our communities: 15 states plus Washington, D.C.

From Boston, New York, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C. to Durham, Charleston, Savannah, and Miami, the nonprofit East Coast Greenway Alliance partners with local to national allies to get the Greenway built.
